How We 3D Print Tabletop Terrain in Calgary
Share
A behind-the-scenes look at how Northern Foundry produces tabletop terrain, miniatures, and accessories from our one-person Calgary workshop.
Why "Made-to-Order" Matters
Most tabletop terrain you buy online sits in a warehouse for months before reaching you. We do it differently — every order at Northern Foundry is printed fresh in our Calgary, Alberta workshop after you place it. Nothing is pre-printed, nothing is shipped from an overseas warehouse, and nothing has been sitting on a shelf in a humid garage.
This means fresher quality, no inventory waste, and the ability to fulfill items that would otherwise be out of stock everywhere else.
Our Printers
We print primarily on calibrated FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printers — the same workhorse technology used by professional studios that need precision and repeatability. Our machines are tuned for tabletop-scale detail, with layer heights fine enough to capture sword pommels, stone block courses on terrain, and the rivets on a starship hull.
We don't use resin for most pieces because resin parts are fragile, smelly, and don't survive shipping or actual gameplay. PLA is sturdier, better for tabletop use, and primes and paints beautifully.
The Material: Premium Grey PLA
Our standard material is premium grey PLA. We chose grey because:
- It primes perfectly. A coat of grey primer is the starting point for almost every miniature painting tutorial — we're already there.
- It hides print artifacts. Subtle layer lines that might show on a white print disappear into the grey base.
- It ships well. PLA doesn't warp in summer heat the way some other filaments do, so your terrain arrives in the shape it was printed.
Licensed Designs from the Best in the Industry
We're a licensed partner of Fat Dragon Games and several other premier tabletop terrain designers. That means every piece we sell from those collections is produced under proper commercial license — supporting the original creators rather than ripping them off.
For our card game pieces like the Riftbound and Gundam token sets, we make our own original designs as fan-made accessories.
From Order to Doorstep
Here's what happens when you place an order:
- Day 1: Order received. It enters the print queue.
- Days 1–10: Printing. Small items (tokens, single minis) ship in 2–4 days. Larger terrain sets take 7–10 days.
- Quality check: Every piece is inspected before packaging. Anything not up to standard gets reprinted, not shipped.
- Pack & ship: Secure packaging, tracked delivery. Free shipping to Canada & the United States, with zero tariffs at the US border thanks to CUSMA.
Why Calgary?
Calgary is our home and our workshop. Shipping from Canada means lower carbon footprint for Canadian customers, no tariffs into the US, and the ability to genuinely say "Made in Canada" — not just designed here, then drop-shipped from somewhere else.
Have a Custom Print Request?
We don't just sell our catalogue. If you have an STL file or need a one-off piece (replacement parts, scaled-up minis, bespoke terrain), submit a Custom Print request. We'll quote within 24 hours and typically deliver in 3–5 days.
